The big shock of this off-season was the sad news of coach Eric Roy's passing. His assistant, Julien Lachuer, is taking over. His aim is to maintain continuity with what Eric Roy was doing by relying on the experience of key players while bringing fresh blood to the squad. The objective is also to gradually incorporate youth from the academy as well as recruits from the Pro 2 group into the Pro squad. Stade Brestois finished the season in unfortunate fashion with a long run of matches without victory and the preseason matches are starting the same way. The group will need to regain confidence to make a good start to Ligue 1 (with a fairly manageable opening fixture list). The objective is clearly survival. Little movement in the transfer market so far. Apart from the arrival of Joseph Nonge. Most of the key players have one year left on their contracts (Magnetti, Lala, Del Castillo, Ajorque) so they could be courted but rumours are rather around others for now (Le Guen, Chotard, Locko). Not much activity yet on arrivals even though a goalkeeper to challenge Coudert, a left-footed centre-back, a box-to-box midfielder and a left winger are being targeted. Departing players should also be replaced. According to the latest rumours, Brest could sign an experienced goalkeeper (Selvik). If that's confirmed, Coudert should still start the season as starter but could quickly lose his place if he's not performing. Brest should also sign Gautier Lloris as left centre-back
Key players
Julien Lachuer should base his team on the backbone of Coudert (or his replacement), Locko, Lala, Chardonnet, Magnetti, Doumbia, Del Castillo, Ajorque, Baldé. It remains to be seen how many will still be present at the end of the transfer window
Players to watch
Raphaël Le Guen is the sensation of the end of last season. Courted by several clubs this summer (including Crystal Palace), Stade Brestois are waiting for €20M for their jewel. If he stays at his academy club, he will be one of the players to watch in this Ligue 1 to see if he can confirm his potential. Hamidou Makalou took advantage of the end of the season to, like Le Guen, show good things in sequences at the end of matches. It's up to him to toughen up physically and prove to the coach that he can be more than a player brought on 10 minutes from the end. Joseph Nonge is a Belgian talent struggling to confirm, notably due to a lack of consistency and focus. But he has huge qualities so if he can be mentally sharp he can have a big season

Pathé Mboup had a somewhat disappointing first season even though he showed encouraging things at times. This second season should be the one where he establishes himself in this squad and becomes the game-changer and finisher that Stade Brestois needs
