Montanier is no longer there and a new coach has arrived at the Etrat, AS Saint-Étienne's training center. Portuguese manager Ian Cathro will have the objective of bringing Les Verts back to L1. Based on the preseason, we're looking at a new 4-2-2 system. The squad is still undergoing major changes with several departures already confirmed (Maubleu, Appiah, Tardieu, Kanté, Soumahoro) and more to come (Nadé, Moueffek, Annan, Ekwah) What will happen to the 2 "stars" of the squad who want to leave the club for a higher level? Stassin and Davitashvili are the 2 most "bankable" players in the squad, but keeping them against their will for a 2nd consecutive season would certainly be a mistake for the team. Stassin's poor start to last season is still fresh in the minds of Saint-Étienne supporters. In the attacking department, depending on who leaves or stays, further transfers could still happen. Currently, Boakyé is in his recovery phase following the World Cup. Old has played again but suffered an injury and Ferreira is expected to start the season Lamba and Jaber won't be able to play again until mid-September at the earliest.
Key players
Le Cardinal will be the new captain this season and the strongman of the defense and pillar of the team. The young full-back Kévin Pédro, developed at the club, had a breakout season last year and will have all the tools to confirm this season.
Players to watch
The new signings Csongvai and Breum could well make their mark. The Hungarian should be in charge of set pieces and will be the midfield metronome. The young Dane should provide service to the strikers and even score plenty of goals with his above-average technique. His experience in the Eredivisie with Go Ahead Eagles, where he played in European competition, will be a plus.
The fan's bet
The season will be tough but Les Verts have learned from their failure last season. Ligue 2 will be highly competitive this year with the vast majority of clubs being former Ligue 1 / Division 1 sides. Will Nantes and Metz digest their relegation? The 2 direct promotion spots to Ligue 1 will be contested with Reims and Montpellier in the mix, but Les Verts have the squad to avoid missing out on promotion a 2nd consecutive year. The question remains whether the new coach will be able to implement his system and whether the new signings will bring real added value to the team!
